Article: A gift from us to you from Gerda Boateng

A gift from us to you from Gerda Boateng

Our tech artist this month is the wonderfully talented Gerda Boateng; a Ghanaian Canadian, multi-disciplinary creative.

Gerda, this work is beautiful! Can you tell us a bit about it?

The goal of my work is to show women of colour they are art too. Growing up as a young dark skinned girl, I was often bullied because of the complexion of my skin. Those experiences have motivated me to create art that is meant to focus on the beauty in one’s so-called “flaws”. These flaws can stem from negative perceptions perpetuated by oneself, community,or media. I find it very important to focusing on providing representation for women of color who don’t often see themselves within illustrations.

Could you tell us a little bit about your approach and work?

My work may vary from time to time, I try to test out many different mediums to keep myself challenged, this way I am able to deliver compelling pieces of art that capture one’s attention. I also often create with design ideas In mind. Because I truly love practical art. I don’t feel that all art must stay on walls. I think it should be worn, held, and provide people with something tangible to appreciate.

What about these particular pieces? How do you want people to feel when they observe them?

I really wanted to capture the feeling of letting go, simply letting yourself go, your thoughts, beliefs and imagination. I wanted these pieces to provide an escape for the viewer.

Our intention in April was around Letting Go. What are your thoughts on that?

A saying that has always stuck with me is, “ holding onto a grudge is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die”. With that being said My whole life is built around letting go, not holding on to emotions, people, or moments that no longer serve the best for me. I find holding onto things that don’t provide positive reactions or outcomes for me are only hurting me in the long run. So In order to have peace and joy I’m an advocate for letting things go.

We’re always curious about what people are listening to. What’s your go-to right now or in general?

Right now I am really into chill vibes I’m obsessed with Iniko, Nemahsis and Maeta I can listen to these three ladies allll day literally
