Article: A Gift From Us to You from Mackenzie

A Gift From Us to You from Mackenzie

This month we're thrilled to feature multidisciplinary artist Mackenzie, AKA FloatingInPlace.

Mackenzie, thank you very much for being part of this beautiful community. Could you please introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about yourself?

I'm very happy to be a part of this lovely community! I’m a visual artist who started a small business called FloatingInplace. I picked the name FloatingInPlace because it reminds me of the feeling you get when meditating or daydreaming. My art focuses on mental health, positive affirmations, and self care which is all very important to me! I love being in nature, making art, meditating, and live music!

Could you tell us a little bit about your approach and work?

I make art, because it's therapeutic and healing for me. I enjoy doodling and sketching funky shapes that resemble aspects of nature. I enjoy using words and affirmations that help me personally in my art. I get inspiration from writing and using my poetry as well.

What about these particular pieces? How do you want people to feel when they observe them?

I hope people feel a sense of peace when they look at these pieces. I hope my art helps people to center themselves, which is why I choose to use powerful mantras and affirmations. I surround the words I use with abstract illustrations showing that even in a crazy world we are still always able to find stillness.

Our intention this month is “Simplify”. What are your thoughts on that and how is it reflected in this work?

When I think of Simplify, I think of slowing down my thoughts and learning to be in the present moment. I tend to get overwhelmed and chaotic when I think about the future or past, but when I stay in the present it's easier to simplify. Simplify to me, means focus on what we can do and not getting caught up in the unnecessary stress we create for ourselves. Connecting to your breath, and setting intentions for the day are a powerful tool in learning to simplify.

Where or what is your favourite place or way to simplify?

My favorite place to simplify is definitely in nature. I have lots of special places in nature that are close to me, listening to the sounds around me, focusing on the task of walking and admiring the sounds and views around me. My favorite way is meditating. Honestly, meditating has changed my life so much for the better. It helps me to focus on what is important and to center myself and stay grounded.

We’re always curious about what people are listening to. What’s your go-to right now or in general? I love listening to Phish and the Grateful Dead, and getting lost in their music and then finding myself again!

I also really enjoy listening to the Cathy Heller Show don't keep your day job Podcast especially when I create. It's empowering and inspiring to me!
