Week 2: Moral Courage
If something feels wrong in your gut, it probably is. Staying silent or looking the other way perpetuates the problem. Moral Courage is doing the right thing even when it’s uncomfortable or unpopular. This type of courage allows us to take a step in the right direction. Never underestimate the power of that first step.
Moral courage means standing up for your ethics and principles, even when it is not convenient, and most of all, when it could actually be to your detriment. It sounds easy but it definitely takes some practice.
To prepare yourself for times when your moral courage will be sorely tested, you should practice what you preach in the small decisions you make every day. When you’re tempted to lie to your boss to save your own back, don’t. When the cashier gives you more change than you’re supposed to get, let them know. When someone pressures you to spill the tea, stick to your intuitions.
Moral courage is not an innate attribute that someone is born with, but rather a skill that needs to be learned and practiced often. What is a conflict for you that requires new levels of moral courage to face?
