May: Kindness
If you take a deep breath and look for the helpers (we’ve been watching a LOT of Mr. Rogers lately), it is truly amazing the inner capacity for healing and wellness that we each possess. Every person has innate inner strengths that emerge when most needed. The pandemic pushed most of us to another level of digging deep for our internal resources and resilience. It also challenged most of us socially, so an intention on kindness is perhaps much needed.
According to Action for Happiness, a group studying what contributes to happiness in our lives, “Research shows that happiness, compassion and kindness are the products of skills that can be learned and enhanced through training, thanks to the neuroplasticity of our brains.” Which means, incredibly, we are born with a capacity for kindness because we are hard-wired for love and compassion.
This month we’re going to explore the many facets of kindness. Starting with self — because we are usually our own biggest critics. We’ll also chat about kindness online (it does exist!) and our common humanity. We will also look at random acts of kindness, and why they make everyone feel so warm and fuzzy.
Because it’s my favourite (birthday) month, this intention places a deliberate emphasis on one purpose: to direct well-wishes and goodwill first to ourselves and then, as a ripple effect, to others. Cue the warm and fuzzies!
