Week 4: Letting Go Of Change

Uncertainty shakes most of us. In fact, the mere mention of the word "change" is enough to send a shiver down the spine. While this fundamental part of life can often feel disorienting and scary, it’s also what helps us grow, move forward, and ultimately live a fulfilling life.

Every single one of us deals with change on a daily basis — be it external (the place we live, the people we know) or internal (emotions, physical sensations, thoughts). But even if we’re able to acknowledge change on a fundamental level, it may still feel difficult to openly embrace it.

Here are five small practices to help you learn to embrace change and harness your creativity.

1. Mix up your routines.
You may be stuck in ruts you don’t even realize. It might sound ridiculous but try something as simple as brushing your teeth with your non-dominant hand.

2. Experiment with new tastes.
You never know what might soon become a new favourite.

3. Add playfulness to your day.
Try a new accent when you order coffee or when you’re shopping try on an outfit you wouldn’t normally.

4. Reach out to others.
Compliment a stranger on something they’re wearing or doing, or ask someone for directions somewhere.

5. Clear out old stuff.
If we resist the little changes in our lives, we have a much harder time dealing with the big changes. When a certain method isn’t working for you, take a step back, clarify what you want to accomplish, and open yourself up to approaching the problem in a different way.
