Monday Must: Keeping Creative

MEET SARAH, A MULTIDISCIPLINARY CREATIVE CURRENTLY WORKING AS ART DIRECTOR AT INKBOX. THIS WEEK SHE’D LIKE TO SHARE WITH YOU SOME SIMPLE SOLUTIONS TO KEEP THAT CREATIVITY FLOWING!

Quarantine has been a creatively draining time for me, and it’s definitely taken my mental health for one heck of a ride. It’s been hard to conceptualize literally anything while confined to one space. A lot of us aren’t able to access our usual outlets for creativity (studios, classes, resources, you name it) and it’s been really tough to stay inspired, so I’ve put together a few simple tips that have been super helpful for me when feeling detached from my creativity!

Designated Space

If you’re able to, it’s helpful to set up a designated space at home for creating (whatever that means for you). Whether it's a small corner set up with objects that you love, a patch of natural light pouring in from a window, or a full-blown home studio- having your own space that’s separate from your living area can easily spark inspiration.

Discovering (or Rediscovering) Music

With some extra time on my hands, I’ve finally had the chance to explore some new, and some old, favourite tunes. Stimulating your senses with the right sound can totally revamp your project- or at least push you in the right direction! Look for something that gives you that ~feeling~  you know the one. And if you’re stuck, here’s a little something to get you started!

Collaborating with Pals

After repeatedly cycling through the same sources of inspiration, sometimes you just need a new perspective. Try collaborating on a moodboard with a few friends- share portfolios, artists, brands, resources, anything! You might just find what you’ve been looking for. I’ve recently started using Invision and dropmark and I would definitely recommend them if you’re looking for a new platform to organize your ideas. I also want to give a shoutout to some of the artists and makers who have been inspiring me lately with the really cool things they’re doing:

  1. @rightmood

  2. @onedna.earth

  3. @luna.knods

  4. @lexsonator

  5. @daniirey

  6. @iamjarijones

Taking a Break

Sometimes all you need to do is step away, even just for 5 minutes. I’ve been getting overwhelmed when it feels like a project isn’t flowing the way I want it to, and taking a few minutes to stretch or go for a walk can help to release all of that frustration and pressure. Remember that it’s absolutely okay to come back to it tomorrow, or next week, or whenever inspiration strikes. Creativity can’t be forced, so take a break and clear your head!

A Personal Project

Whatever your medium, make something that’s just for you, with no expectations. Pick up your supplies, make a mood board, listen to that song- don’t overthink it- just start! It will feel so good as soon as you get going, and who knows what it might turn into!
