Monday Must: 5 Ways to Treat Yourself (Em's Edition)

EM IS A VISUAL ARTIST BASED IN TORONTO. SHE OBSESSED WITH EXPLORING DIFFERENT MEDIUMS AND SHE'S CURRENTLY WORKING TO ENHANCE HER VISUAL LANGUAGE. EM SHARES HER TOP FIVE THINGS TO DO WHEN SHE WANTS TO TREAT HERSELF - IDEAL FOR ANYONE WITH AN INNER ARTIST!

Make a cup of coffee (use locally roasted beans)

As a barista, coffee is a big part of my everyday life! Every cup of coffee still feels like a treat to me despite drinking it every day (please drink coffee in moderation). Before the pandemic, I loved going to different cafes in the city and trying different kinds of coffee. But now, with the new normal, I’m learning to enjoy making and drinking coffee from the comfort of my home. When I’m at home I prefer a drip coffee for myself using locally roasted coffee (support local businesses!) and I usually read a book or just stare at the wall while drinking coffee (gives me a mental break) and honestly it’s the best way to kick off your morning!

Get yourself some flowers

Flowers are one of those things that never fails to brighten up my mood. I treat myself with flowers at least once a month and every time I do I feel like it's the best decision ever. If you ever find yourself wanting flower arrangements, @paraluman.flora makes really cool and colourful arrangements! There’s something about having flowers in your space that makes you feel inspired and happy.

Feast YOUR EYES on some art!

I do this on a daily basis and I recommend you do the same if you like visual art! Before this pandemic, one major thing I did to treat myself, is to visit the nearest art gallery. It’s difficult now, however, you can still treat your eyes with amazing art, you just need a phone and good internet and boom! Some artists I recommend stalking on Instagram are @vicsequeira (check her out to see amazing contour line work!) and @metaworldshrimp (check her out to see some very cool and unique hand-made ceramic pieces!) and if you like their work let them know and share it! Let’s support each other especially during unprecedented times like this.

Make some art

Now that you saw some art, it's time to make some art! Art making is full of different mediums so find one that works for you! It doesn’t have to be “pretty” or “professional” or “perfect” it just has to be something you make and have fun with it! I make art for a living but there are definitely days where I treat myself by making a full mess without feeling the pressure that comes with being an “artist” and it feels great to just let yourself loose with a brush in your hand.

Spend some time in Mother Nature

Lastly, putting aside time to go for a walk or hike is a must! Especially around this time where the scenery is so picturesque - and makes a great painting reference. I recently went for a day trip to Algonquin and all I have been talking about is how beautiful the colours of the trees are! So, make sure to remind yourself that you deserve some time to go and appreciate mother nature!
